WordPress Prevent Comments: How to Disable Discussion on Your Site

If you’ve spent even five minutes poking around WordPress, you’ve probably noticed the comments section hanging out under your posts. And if you’re anything like me when I started, you’re probably wondering:
“Do I really need this?”

Well, yes—and no. Comments can be awesome. They let your readers chime in, ask questions, leave praise (or the occasional grumble), and turn your blog into a bit of a community hub. But like any good party, someone’s gotta keep an eye on things.

Let’s break it all down, minus the tech jargon and with a few laughs along the way.

The Basics: Comments 101

Turning Comments On or Off

By default, WordPress is all like, “Let’s hear everyone’s thoughts!” and leaves comments on for all new posts.
Not feeling it? Head over to your dashboard, go to Settings → Discussion, and flip the switch. Easy.

Spam, Glorious Spam

Ah yes, spam—the digital equivalent of junk mail and robocalls rolled into one. Once your site starts getting noticed, the bots come running.

That’s where Akismet comes in. It’s like the bouncer at your comment club, keeping out the weirdos offering shady deals and miracle cures.

You’re the Boss (Moderation)

Don’t want just anyone posting whatever they want? Totally fair. You can make it so comments have to get your thumbs-up before going live.

Think of it like screening texts before replying—except you’re not ghosting anyone. (Well… mostly.)

Tweak It Your Way: Discussion Settings

Now if you’re like me and love fiddling with knobs and switches (figuratively, not literally), the Discussion Settings page is your playground.

Here’s what you can fine-tune:

  • Allow Comments: Don’t want comments on new posts? Untick that box and boom—silence.
  • Hold for Moderation: You can tell WordPress to hold comments with too many links. Spammy vibes? Into the penalty box they go.
  • Blacklist: Got certain words or email addresses you just don’t want to see again? Add ’em here.
  • Pingbacks & Trackbacks: These are like blog high-fives from other sites. You can keep ’em or mute ’em. Your call.

Taking Control: Managing Comments Like a Pro

Want to Stop Comments on Future Posts?

Easy peasy:

  1. Go to Settings → Discussion
  2. Uncheck “Allow people to post comments on new articles”

Now your future posts will be blissfully comment-free (unless you change your mind later).

Got a Ton of Comments to Clean Up?

Been there. One of my old posts once got 400 spam comments overnight—why? Still no idea.

To delete them in bulk:

  1. Head to the Comments section in your dashboard.
  2. Select a bunch using the checkboxes.
  3. Choose “Move to Trash” from the dropdown and click Apply.

Feels good. Like a digital spring cleaning.

Just One Post You Want to Quiet Down?

  1. Edit that post or page.
  2. Look in the Discussion settings panel on the right.
  3. Uncheck “Allow comments”.

Boom. No more chatter on that one.

Final Thought: Your Comments, Your Rules

Whether you’re all about building a buzzing community or just want a peaceful, comment-free zone, WordPress gives you the tools to make it happen.

Play around, see what works, and don’t be afraid to shut it all down if the trolls start getting too loud. This is your blog, after all.

Need help setting something up? I’ve been through the comment wars—happy to share what I’ve learned!
