What is a Popup?
Popups have come a long way since Ethan Zuckerman (creator of the original pop-up ad) invented them and destroyed the user experience. A popup is an ad on your site that appears whenever a user performs a specific action such as landing on a page, clicking a button, or remaining on the site for a certain duration. Unlike traditional banners or ads that appear on the side or bottom of your site, pop-ups appear right above your content.
Popups Can Be a Great Option to Make Your Site More Attractive and Engaging
In today’s world, information is king. If you can get your message out there, you’re more likely to connect with your audience. It doesn’t matter if you’re a small business or a large corporation; the same principles apply. The best way to do this is through websites and online platforms. You can increase your conversion rate by create engaging content that people want to read and share. One of the easiest ways to do this is add popups to your site.
Popups can make your site more attractive and engaging. They can be used to communicate with customers, to ask questions, or to provide additional information. When used appropriately, they can help drive conversions. However they can also be a source of concern. Some people find them annoying and intrusive, while others might feel tricked into clicking on them.
Things to Keep in Mind When Creating Popups
First, make sure you know what the main reason of your popup is before you create it. If your main goal is to get your customers to join your mailing list, there’s no need for a pop-up that asks for their email address, as you should consider using a form or an embedded widget instead within the main body of content. However if you choose your trigger options carefully, you could include a popup with special offers such as a free ebook.
Second, make sure that your popup is clearly visible and easy to understand. Make sure there’s space around it and that it isn’t overlapped by other parts of the page. And remember that people dislike popups if they feel like they’ve been tricked into clicking on them. So be careful about what popup triggers you use and the design of your popup itself (e.g., whether it looks like an ad or not).
Third, make sure you are conscious of the appropriate type of popup to utilise. For example perhaps configure your popup settings to only work on a specific page, don’t do popups for every single page.

Divi Toolbox Plugin
If you’re looking for a plugin to add popups to your wordpress site, I personally utilise and recommend the Divi Toolbox plugin by Divi Lover. It’s easy to use and has tons of options to utilise for any WordPress website using the Divi Theme. Not only that but this is a plugin designed for dozens of features for your website as a whole not just exclusively plugins.
What’s great about this plugin, is you can create your layout using the native divi builder, and assigning that layout to premade ID Selectors. Unfortunately you can only have a maximum of 5 popups each can be triggered by any link on the site. It can be a menu item, a button module, any link in the text module. However unless you are a large ecommerce store that requires a few dozen different types of popups, you only really want to be using just a few. Despite having a cap, the usability of this plugin is so simple and quick, even those unexperienced should have no issues.
